Overview of Year Five

“The most significant feature of our time compared with past decades is the rate of change. Science and technology and the inventions of the human race unfold themselves with such frightening speed that they cause bewilderment and social tensions. We cannot avoid them and we must make the wisest use of them.”

Sir Vincent Fairfax, October 1971

The rate of change in the world has only increased in the 55 years since Sir Vincent pondered the impacts of such a fast changing world. More than any other segment of society, young people will bear the costs of whether society makes the “wisest use” of these advancements.

This year we welcomed HoMie to the portfolio, supporting their plans to expand to Sydney. HoMie is a Melbourne-based social enterprise streetwear brand which supports young people affected by homelessness or hardship, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and experience to be more work-ready and better prepared for their future. Young people are overrepresented in homelessness statistics, but it is a situation they are able to move out of with the right support and opportunity. HoMie has a proven model, co-designed with young people, which provides these exact kinds of supportive opportunities.

Meet Aimee

Queensland Performing Arts Centre

A - Aimee

"I loved theatre through school and dreamed of a career in this industry. I just never thought I would get the opportunity to do it right here in Townsville,” said Aimee.

“During the traineeship I have been learning so much about all the technical areas of theatre. I am really enjoying the audio aspects and I have worked on a few musicals now doing radio mics. My team is really supportive and takes the time to teach me every chance they get. I can really see a future in the industry.”

Graham Menzies is Program Manager at Tech Connect Queensland and is excited to see the program reach more young people in regional areas. Graham recently went on the road, visiting the young trainees at all the regional sites across Queensland.

“It was incredibly inspiring to visit participants from Toowoomba to Cairns and everywhere in between. The key take out from the trip was the energy the participants are bringing to their traineeship and the impact that is having on the whole team. The trainees are benefiting from the experience and passion of their supervisors, while the supervisors themselves are being recognised and valued as educators.”
